Bariatric Surgery. Historical Review and Perspective
Choi Seung-Ho

Abstract
Weight loss (bariatric) surgery is expanding to control morbidly obesity. Historically, a lot of surgical methods with
restrictive, mal-absorptive, or combined have been developed. Weight loss surgery is the only effective therapy for morbid
obesity with level I medical evidence. The indication of bariatric surgery in Asian patients is BMI >35 kg/m2 or >30 kg/m2
with diabetes or two other obesity-related co-morbidities. The bariatric surgery in Korea was started in 2003 and sleeve
gastrectomy, gastric bypass, mini-gastric bypass, vertical gastroplasty, gastric banding, and duodeojejunal bypass were
performed. Now, we should be interested in late complication and long-term nutritional support after surgery. In addition,
good public relation and political support will be needed for the development of bariatric surgery in Korea.
